Passport Photo Size for School Forms in India (35 x 45 mm)

The rule comes from Passport Seva, the Government of India passport portal. Its photo guidelines ask for a colour photograph, sized 45 mm by 35 mm, on a white background. So the width is 35 mm and the height is 45 mm. In centimetres, that is 3.5 cm by 4.5 cm.

School forms rarely define the size themselves. They just say passport size. When you follow the Passport Seva standard, the same photo works everywhere. It works for admission forms, scholarship portals, board exam records, and the actual passport if the family ever applies for one.

Size is only half the job. Most photo problems come from the background or the face position. The official guidelines are clear on both.

We see three common mistakes in school photos. Students stand against classroom walls with charts behind them. Faces are too small in the frame. Window light throws a shadow on one side of the face. A plain wall and a straight, close shot fix all three.

• Colour photo on a plain white background.
• Close shot of the head and top of the shoulders, so the face fills 80 to 85% of the photo.
• Full face, front view, eyes open.
• The full head visible, from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, centred in the frame.
• No shadows on the face or on the background.

A school needs these photos through the whole year. Admission forms need one at entry. Scholarship applications need one at upload time. Board exam forms need one that will sit on official documents.

The board exam case matters most. CBSE says the Admit Card is generated as an Identity Card for the exam, based on the information the school submits about the student. CBSE also tells students to carry the Admit Card and the school identity card to the exam. So the photo your school submits ends up on the document that proves the child's identity in the exam hall. A blurred or badly cropped photo follows the student all the way there.

Stamp size is a smaller photo that some offices ask for on registers and service records. There is no single government rule for it the way there is for passport size, so studios cut it slightly differently.

If a form asks for stamp size, confirm the exact size with the office that issued the form. For school admission forms, passport size is the standard. It is also the safe default when a form just says photo.

Photo labs print on standard 4x6 inch sheets, which is 10x15 cm. Depending on the layout, 4 to 8 passport photos of 35x45 mm fit on one sheet. A rotated two by four layout gives 8 photos, and a common template layout gives 6.

For a school, the useful habit is to keep one good soft copy per student. Any number of print sheets can be made from that file during the year. Online portals can be handled from the same file too. Some portals ask for pixel sizes or KB limits. Those exact numbers appear next to the upload button. Keep the 35 by 45 shape and follow what the form says.

Here is the practical shortcut. A correct ID card photo and a correct passport photo need the same shot. That means a plain background, front view, head and shoulders, and no shadows. The card itself is a different size. A standard ID card measures 85.60 x 53.98 mm, the same size as a credit card. But the photo printed on it starts from the same head and shoulders shot.
